Not too long ago, if you saw a woman in a ponytail and workout clothes, she was almost definitely on her way to or from the gym without any stops in between. In fact, most women would change from their everyday clothes into workout clothes when they got to the gym, then shower and change back into those clothes when they got done.
Today, though, you’ll see that same woman running errands, getting coffee with her friends, and going about her normal, everyday routine in her workout clothes. Granted, those clothes have gotten a lot more attractive and fun with different casual cuts and cool colors that make it easy to go from workout-wear to street-wear without changing anything but their shoes (if that).
With more and more women getting fit and getting interested in yoga, CrossFit, running, kickboxing, and other sports and activities, the fashion industry has taken note, and we’ve seen the rise of “athleisure” – cute clothes that can be worn in the gym, when you’re out running, or when you need to run to the store or you want to have brunch with friends on the weekend.
Some have said that athleisure is just a fad and that it’ll fade away like any other hot fashion trend. However, with Nike’s CEO Mark Parker now famously saying, “Leggings are the new denim,” and with so many women around the world agreeing with him, we think that athleisure is here to stay.
A More Convenient and Versatile Wardrobe
Why do we agree with Mr. Parker? Well, for one thing, athleisure apparel gives women a more diverse and convenient wardrobe. If you work out regularly, you don’t have to have separate clothes that you change into when you go to the gym. You can just wear the comfortable, breathable, and attractive athleisure wear that you had on all day.
Furthermore, a lot of athleisure apparel can be dressed up with a cool jacket or a nice top – after all, leggings are the new jeans, so why not treat them like jeans and dress them up and down to match the occasion? And, on top of all that, these clothes move with you, so they look better than a lot of traditional street wear. Plus, we don’t expect women to stop working out and wanting to get fit any time soon, which is great news for athleisure as a style trend.
