Keeping Fit as a Family

As a parent, you’re no doubt concerned about your kids’ health and your own too, right? You want to instill healthy diet and exercise habits in your kids, and you want to be healthy so that you can continue to keep up with them as they get older. Life can get in the way of a regular workout regimen, though, and it can feel like you really don’t have time for fitness. While that’s totally understandable, there’s one problem with it – your kids are directly affected by the choices you make and your daily routines and habits.

As parents, we’ve all had that moment when we hear one of our kids gleefully sing out a curse word, and we thought, “Oh no, where did they get that??” Of course, they got it from hearing us or someone else when we didn’t realize that they were paying attention. 

While correcting foul language is usually a fairly simple process, this is a good example of the ways that our kids mimic us. We’re their models for how to live their lives, and the choices we make about fitness for ourselves and our families will do a lot to form how they approach fitness in their lives now and when they’re older. So how can you help your kids get a head start on healthy living? Follow a couple of simple tips and incorporate them into your daily life, and you’ll see great results for your whole family.

Make Exercise Fun

First of all, find fun, active things that you can do together as a family. You could go on weekend bike rides together, take family walks together, and/or join a family boot camp where you work out together. Whatever you do, make sure that it’s something that will be fun for everyone because this will help your kids associate exercise and fitness with recreation and enjoyment.

Don’t Complain About Going to the Gym

If you’re trying to lose your baby weight, train for a race, or do anything else that requires a lot of gym time, don’t complain about it. If you do, your kids will start to associate the gym with a punishment that you have to do if you gain weight or if you aren’t healthy enough. Instead, stay positive, both when your kids are around and not. It’ll set a good example for your kids, and you might be surprised at the difference it makes for you and your outlook on working out, too.

You can also reinforce healthy rewards by treating yourself to some cool new workout clothes from 2ToneFit instead of an ice cream sundae.
