Choosing a Fitness Regimen that Works for You

Are you trying to figure out how to how to get fit without feeling like you’re stuck in a hamster wheel? While some women love going to the gym, taking spin classes, or doing Zumba, there really is no one-size-fits-all fitness regimen. And, if you don’t find something that you really like, you’re only going to be able to force yourself to stick to it for so long. 

If you want to lose weight, get stronger, increase your flexibility, and/or improve your overall health, you need to get regular exercise. That exercise doesn’t have to be punishment, though. In fact, it can be a lot of fun if you find the right healthy pursuit. So how can you choose a fitness regimen that works for you? Start with these tips based on your personality.

 

You Like a Laid Back and Relaxed Atmosphere

 

If you’re not ultra-competitive, and you aren’t interested in running a marathon, going to the gym or taking up running could sound like torture. However, you may want to consider yoga or Pilates, as these programs are great for your health and fitness but also give you a more relaxed and calm environment.

 

You’re Competitive and Motivated By Numbers

 

Have you tried running or some form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT)? With running or cycling, you can use an app to track how fast and how far you go so that you can compete with yourself. With a lot of HIIT programs (including CrossFit and others), you can get in on a class and strike up a friendly competition with classmates around your fitness level.

 

You’re a Social Butterfly

 

If you love socializing and making new friends, you should probably consider any group exercise program, like CrossFit, Pilates, Zumba, barre, or others that involve working out in a group instead of individually. These will be more engaging for you and will satisfy your urge to meet new people and make friends.

 

Finding the right program, regimen, and/or style of workout that’s right for you may take some time. Use these tips as guidelines to get started and then start trying out different types of workouts to see what works for you. If you hate something, move on to something else. Before you know it, you’ll find a fitness program that really works with your body and your personality, and you’ll be making excuses to go exercise instead of making excuses to sit on the couch!
